The Complete Morons Guide of Social Media Etiquette for Network Marketing

Let’s work together to STOP THE SPAM!!! We must educate these spammy pinheads by holding their hands, not by gloves across the face…..or worse…. the social media “ban” “unfriending” or “blocking.”

FACEBOOK Etiquette:

Have you ever had some knucklehead post their business opportunity, MLM company page, or a flier to some MLM event on the other side of the country…on YOUR Facebook wall? This is very rude. It’s kind of like me cheering and voting for candidate X….while you want candidate Z to win. Then I start putting my signs for candidate X on your front yard without asking your permission for you and all your neighbors to see.

You would, and should, be fired up about that. You can post your own signs on your own wall freely. I will post my own signs on my own wall. If you want to see what I am up to then simply drop by my page and take a peak. If you don’t like what I post on my own wall you can simply “hide” me from your wall feed.

I also see it like you eating off my plate while at restaurant and not knowing me….in essence stay away from my food. My social contacts are mine, and yours belong to you. I can safely say my people don’t care about your “business opportunity of the decade.” I can also safely say, your people don’t care about mine. We have no relationship established….yet.

If YOU are the person who is spamming on other peoples walls, I guarantee with %1000 certainty this is not working for you. You will never sign up any meaningful leader for your business with this method. You may get some bottom feeders, but you will never net the big fish. Let’s face it, attracting leaders to your business is one invaluable component to every successful network marketer. There is no shortcut to building relationships. Relationships ALWAYS come first. If you have the skills, you will attract an amazing force of people to combine forces with.

Leaders like to feel the love before they give the love. I know that sounds corny but let me explain. If you want an MLM guru to align with you, then have got to give them some serious value. What can you do for them? Start by building a relationship based on trust, ethics, and intelligent communication —-this is a commodity :-) . All the rest will fall into place if you just bust your tail and work hard.

If I am your friend on Facebook, that DOES NOT mean I “opted in” to your spammy-sales pitchy-marketing campaigns. I accepted you because I want to socialize and get to know more about you. I have literally banned hundreds, yes hundreds, of rookies who try to message me their MLM opportunity on the very first message after I accept them as a “friend.”  Don’t be this person. You can get little to no backlash if you properly communicate to people through your Facebook Group.

If you are a moderator of a Facebook group, you should not be sending messages multiple times a day….period. Once or twice a week should be enough to keep people interested and not overwhelm them. If you have a lively group and need to send out a daily message….more power to you… but limit it to one time a day or you will look like a moron for not planning out your communication better. Don’t be this person.

If you want to message daily create an “opt-in” page and email your contacts with a service like Aweber .

As I train hundreds of people globally on internet marketing, whenever we get to social media etiquette I am often asked “How often can I post my business opportunity on my wall?”  A good rule of thumb is out of every 8 posts, only 1 should be a marketing post. Throw up some cool quotes, talk about a good movie you saw, brag about your kids making honor roll…this type of stuff 7 times…….then 1 like, “I have a great internet marketing system that you have to check out if you are serious about generating endless leads for your home business”

Twitter Etiquette:

Twitter is a totally different animal than Facebook, Linkedin, or MySpace. This is a micro-blogging site and it actually ranks really well with search engines. So what does this mean? It means you should have more than one Twitter account so you can separate your business tweets from your personal tweets. One account you could use for keyword content and SEO visibility and one account you could use to build more personal relationships.

If you only want one account just follow this simple rule: 1 business tweet out of every 8. I literally have several dozen Twitter accounts and generate a ton of leads everyday with a cool automated posting tool (it even works on Facebook) But I always mix in NON-business tweets on every account as I want the appearance of a real person at the helm. Again, be careful not to spam too much or you will lose followers like crazy(or get your account shut down). Always give value, capture leads, build relationship, then market to them.

Linkedin Etiquette:

Linkedin is a much higher grade of professional per capita than any of the primary social media platforms. All the same rules from above apply here too. The thing is people here will call you out if you are spammy. Trust me, I learned the hard way when I first joined  a few years back.

Bottom line:

Social media is here to stay. Just being online and socializing with people around the world is so cool. If you follow these simple rules of etiquette you will have large followings of people who will actually want to hear from you…and continue to build a relationship with you. Combining social media and business is totally accepted, and I encourage it, as long as you give value and don’t step on peoples toes you too can prosper with social media.

Keep up the great writing and resources. Thanks for your sharing. I think very helpful.

  3. I personally think one out of five tweets can be business related but I suggest testing to see what converts best for your list.

    • James Wehner says:

Right on Brian….1 out of 5 still seems readable. I think it really depends on your content. If you have credibility, keep it creative, and have fun with your audience you can get away with a little more. What’s your Twitter name? I am @HomeBusiness007

      Very best to you!

    Great article James!

You hit the nail right on the head there! People need to realize a couple of things. Marketing isn’t as much about a product or service as it is building relationships. People buy from people. And will buy from people the know, like, and trust before they will anybody else.

Build the relationship first. That way you’ll know if what you have can help who ever you’re communicating with and if what you have helps them, they will come back to you in the future.

Thanks for the comment Bill…I appreciate hearing from you. Relationships ALWAYS come first and when you learn to do that right in business, the money is just a nice byproduct of that.

      To your MASSIVE success!
